As a Dallas photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing many beautiful SMU Law School graduation pictures, and Sydney’s portraits were no exception. Sydney is a 2024 graduate of SMU Dedman School of Law, and she reached out to me well in advance to secure her session date—a smart strategy I always recommend to graduates. Booking early not only guarantees a spot on my calendar before the academic year gets busy, but it also means we can shoot when weekend dates are still available and campus is much less crowded. 

On the day of Sydney’s session, the weather could not have been more perfect. We had the most beautiful sunshine, and the SMU campus practically to ourselves. This allowed us to move around freely without waiting for photo spots to clear, which makes for a relaxed and fun portrait experience.

Many SMU law graduates love to take photos in and around the Dedman Law quad, and we of course captured some timeless portraits there. For longer sessions, I always encourage venturing outside the law quad to highlight more of SMU’s stunning campus. Dallas Hall, especially at golden hour, is one of my favorite spots for SMU graduation pictures. Always a winning backdrop, it is also perfect for professional headshots that graduates can use well beyond their session. 

Sydney’s approach is one I recommend to all soon-to-be graduates: reach out early! Whether you’re at Dedman School of Law, Cox School of Business, or finishing your undergrad at SMU, reserving your session ahead of time ensures that you’ll have your pick of dates and the best lighting conditions before the spring rush.
